Talc has a TOT layer structure similar to that of montmorillonite, but the Al³⁺ ions in the octahedral sheet are replaced by Mg²⁺ (brucite sheet). The bonding force between the oxygen atoms of adjacent layers is weak, which causes easy cleavage perpendicular to the c-axis and accounts for the mineral’s softness. Its theoretical chemical composition is 63.5% SiO₂, 31.7% MgO, and 4.8% H₂O.
